Experiment in a box: artificial snow. Snow that doesn't melt

Scientific experiments and experiments Simple science will allow you to clearly and in an accessible form show children how interesting and exciting chemistry is. All the necessary ingredients for the experiment are collected in small boxes, detailed instructions and a description of the experiment are given. The Simple Science experiment set in a box allows your child to conduct an experiment on their own.

The artificial snow experiment kit is one of the most popular kits from Simple Science. Our customers buy the Artificial Snow experience several times, order it as a gift for friends or as small but interesting gifts for children at school.

Children really enjoy creating and then playing with the “snow.” The experience does not require serious preparation or a long time. To make artificial snow with your own hands, just take 2 glasses and the contents of the kit. As soon as the water and powder are combined, the magic begins - you can witness how snow appears. One bag yields 2 liters of “snow”.

The advantage of this set is that it can be used several times. Gradually, the moisture from the snow will evaporate, but if you add water again, the volume will gradually begin to increase. You can also dry the snow to a powder state, remove it, and then use it again. To do this, you need to spread the snow on paper in a thin layer and let it dry.

To buy an Artificial Snow Experiment Kit, just add the product to your cart and select a convenient delivery method.

Experiment in a box No. 09: Artificial snow

Set from section: physics for children from 6 years old.

Experiment time: from 10 min.

Difficulty level: 1 of 3

Set contents: sodium polyacrylate, instructions (+video)

Description: To carry out the experiment, you will need two glasses of water and the contents of the kit. As soon as the powder comes into contact with water, it will immediately begin to absorb it and increase in volume. From a small bag it turns out two liters of fluffy "snow"!

Children will really enjoy playing with this “snow”, because with its help you can make a toy snowfall, make “snow” drifts for toy cars and even recreate a winter fairy-tale forest.

Unlike other sets from the "" series, artificial snow can be reused. The moisture will gradually evaporate from it, and the snow will begin to lose volume. But once you add a little water again, the volume will return. And if you spread the snow in a thin layer on newspaper and let the water completely evaporate, then you can put it in a box and take it out again when the child wants to play with the “snow” again.

Video

The experiment demonstrates the absorbent properties of sodium polyacrylate. This composition is actively used to absorb moisture, for example, in baby diapers.

Photos from our customers

This video was shot and sent to us by one of our customers. Two young experimenters, Elisha and Arsyusha, conduct this experiment independently without outside help. Look how quickly and easily they can make “artificial snow” from the kit.

Reviews

The powder itself is cool, you pour it into your palms and pour warm water on top (the more bitter it is, the faster the reaction will take place) and soft artificial snow grows in your hands. One minus - very expensive.

We regretted that we did not do the experiment outside, because, naturally, the children wanted to play in the snow, but I did not allow this in the kitchen. At the end we added water with gouache, so our snow turned blue.

It’s nice to play around in it (like kinetic sand), but you won’t be able to make something out of it. At first we wanted to make a snowman, then at least a caterpillar, but in the end we just played with it in a bowl.

I tried another set from “Simple Science” #experiment in a box. The kit includes nice packaging, a bag of white powder - sodium polyacrylate and instructions containing information about the substance, its use, and safety precautions. It turns out that in addition to the experience presented on the manufacturer’s website, you can easily find many others on the Internet. Based on their motives, I also conducted a simple experiment in my lesson). I pour water into a glass containing a little powder, wait until it is completely absorbed and turn the glass over https://youtu.be/NiZOs5CsVnE. It turns out that the powder can be reused if you let it dry first. In general, I expected less, but it turned out to be interesting).

Simple and interesting experiments for children. A great way to get your child interested in science. Good idea for a gift. Children have many questions along the lines of “why is this happening.”

Simple, independent and exciting. And most importantly - visually, because it is one thing to hear or read that this powder can absorb a lot of water and another thing to see.

Experiment Artificial snow– this is a sea of fun ideas in one box. The chemical substance that is in it, due to its incredible absorbent properties, increases in volume and forms a real snowdrift right in the room. Discover science in a fun way!

Snow that doesn't melt

The box contains instructions and a bag of sodium polyacrylate. Pour its contents into a two-liter jar or other large container. Then slowly pour a glass of water into it and mix thoroughly. Do the same with the second glass. Right before our eyes, the substance begins to swell and increase in size. As a result, one bag produces a whole liter of soft and crumbly snow. This is due to the fact that sodium polyacrylate is able to absorb liquid 300 times its own volume.

If the “snow” turns out to be too watery, it means you overdid it with liquid.

The substance can be reused: when moisture evaporates, it loses volume and gradually returns to its original state. The dried “snow” can be stored in a box and taken out when the child wants to play with it. How? There are many options! You can build a snowman, play snowballs, arrange “drifts” for cars, and recreate a wonderful winter landscape.

Benefits for development

An experiment in a box expands knowledge about the world around us, develops imagination, curiosity, patience and accuracy.

Imagine and experiment!

This summer I saw small boxes with different experiments from Simple Science LLC on sale. I bought it for the kids to try and they all enjoyed experimenting. In this review I’ll tell you how to get white, crumbly and warm snow in the middle of summer. Children from 4 to 13 years old watched the experiment and did not get bored with what they saw.

4. It’s not convenient to mix in a jar, so I pour everything into a bowl. Hurray, the snow turned out to be white, warm and completely pleasant to the touch.

We tried to make a snowman out of it. The children (mine and the neighbors) enthusiastically began to knead it, in order of turn. There were 5 children watching the experiment, so they sculpted slowly.

It turned out that artificial snow molds well and holds its shape.

My impressions

It’s hard to surprise modern children, but this summer this experiment was a great success. Of course, this is entertainment for one time. Don’t think that you can buy a bag of sodium polyacrylate for every holiday and it will make everyone happy.

Disadvantages - after the experiment you need to wash your hands. The experiment is not suitable for very young children. They can even be put into your mouth and you need to be careful to wash your hands afterwards. I really liked the snowball, it doesn’t have a strong smell, it’s warm and so pleasant. After playing with it, we left the snow in the basin. Slowly it began to melt, but it turned not into water, but into something slimy and viscous. I think that you shouldn’t throw this snow down the toilet, but rather dispose of it in the trash.
