Formation and development of the brigade

Like all special forces brigades created in the early 60s (with the exception of the 3rd brigade), 16th brigade was a cropped formation, in which, according to the states of peacetime, the personnel was 300-350 people. According to the plans of the military command during the introduction of martial law, due to the mobilization of reserve military personnel and the conduct of 30-day training sessions, 16th brigade developed into a full-fledged combat-ready formation with a personnel of 1,700 people.

According to the peacetime state, the 16th brigade consisted of the following units:

Participation of the 16th Special Forces Brigade in hostilities

Civil war in Tajikistan

In 1992, due to the aggravation of the situation in Tajikistan, which grew into civil war, the framed 201st motorized rifle division of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, stationed in the republic, finds itself in a difficult situation. There was an acute shortage of personnel in almost all parts of the compound. For example, in the 191st motorized rifle regiment there were only 180 people, which was insufficient to protect and defend the military equipment of the regiment from the formations of the Islamic opposition, in the conditions of the actual siege of military towns.

The first special forces formations to come to the aid of parts of the Russian 201st division were units from the 15th separate special forces brigade of the Armed Forces of Uzbekistan, which moved forward in August 1992. As a result of pressure from the leadership of Uzbekistan on the Russian authorities, with the demand for an early intervention in the internal Tajik conflict, the leadership of the RF Armed Forces decided to reinforce the units of the 201st division with units of the 3rd separate guards and 16th separate special-purpose brigades.

In the period from September 28 to November 30, 1992, the 370th detachment and the 669th detachment of the 16th brigade, with a total number of 402 people, carried out the protection and defense of strategically important military and state facilities on the territory of Tajikistan

First Chechen war

In early January 1995, on the basis of the 16th brigade, a consolidated detachment was created to conduct hostilities in Chechnya. The basis for the creation of the detachment was 370th Special Forces, whose commander was appointed Ye.G. Sergeev. Detachment 370 was brought into Chechnya on January 13, 1995. On the morning of January 24, 1995, by order of the commander of the grouping of forces, the 370th detachment ensured the advancement of the marine battalion in Chernorechye (Grozny region). At the same time, the detachment lost two soldiers killed. In the evening of the same day, the detachment returned to the temporary base in the building former school on the outskirts of Grozny. At 20:45, a powerful explosion occurred as a result of which the school building was completely destroyed. As a result of the explosion, all 35 servicemen of the detachment who were inside the building were killed. There was no official investigation into the tragedy. According to the survivors, there were three versions of what happened:

  • explosion of a stock of explosives brought by a detachment that was in the building;
  • preliminary mining by militants of the school building before the arrival of federal troops;
  • accidental hit of an artillery shell fired by federal troops into the school building.

In connection with this incident, every year on January 24 in the 16th separate special forces brigade, it is noted as Day of Remembrance... On May 2, 1995, the detachment was withdrawn from the territory of Chechnya and was returned to the point of permanent deployment. During the hostilities, the 370th detachment lost 48 people killed according to some sources, according to others - 50 people,

Second Chechen war

In connection with the complication of the situation in the summer of 1999 in Dagestan, the leadership of the RF Armed Forces began to strengthen the grouping of troops in this region. In early August 1999, in the 16th brigade, now on the basis of the 664th detachment, a consolidated detachment was created to be sent to Dagestan, to fight the Islamist groups that invaded from the territory of Chechnya.

On August 14, 1999, the 664th detachment in the amount of 250 people was introduced to the temporary operational group of forces in the North Caucasus.

On January 1, 2000, the 664th detachment operated in the vicinity of the settlement. Starye Atagi south of Grozny. By the summer of 2000, the detachment was stationed in the settlement. Urus-Martan and acted in conjunction with the 245th motorized rifle regiment. In January 2001, the detachment operated in the vicinity of the village of Goity, on the Sunzhensky and Nadterechny ridge. By the summer of 2001, the detachment was operating in the vicinity of N of the item. Alkhan-Kala. In September and October of the same year, the detachment operated in the area of Shali, Avtury and Kurchaloy. In May 2003, the 664th detachment took part in the destruction of bandit formations on the territory of Ingushetia. As part of a permanent periodic replacement of military personnel, the 664th detachment was in the North Caucasus until September 26, 2006, after which the detachment was returned to a new point of permanent deployment in Tambov.

In total, the 16th separate special forces brigade in the second Chechen war lost 51 people killed.

As usual, we were shown the behavior of groups in a combat situation and the training of military personnel, expressed in overcoming various obstacle courses.
At the first stage, there was the advancement of the group, the detection and destruction of the enemy, then the withdrawal under the cover of the units of the company of special weapons. Everything was fast enough - the group was advancing in dashes, a short fire raid, and a retreat.
So beloved by all finger along;)

The dynamics of the "battle" was constantly extinguished by the shooting fraternity, which captured the fighters in courageous poses.
5.

6.

7.

The "battle" was carried out directly at the shooting range of the "Trigulyai" range and was fought with live ammunition, so there was no option to shoot near. So as not to be hooked.
This boychina cheerfully landed 5 RPG-18 grenades on targets
8.

Under cover of fire from the PKP "Pecheneg", the group withdrew from the "Tiger" company of special weapons
9.

As for the "Tigers", the officers have the following opinion: such a machine is needed only in a company of special weapons (the rest of the units are either airlifted or advanced on foot) and even then not in the current version. The company is armed with this moment consist of STS GAZ-233014, which have an unarmored engine and protection of the module with the crew from bullets 7.62. We need fully armored vehicles (at least holding armor-piercing 7.62) with mandatory engine protection. The main weapon is considered a machine gun, although there are also installed automatic grenade launchers AGS-17
10.

"Tigers" were received in 2009, before that in the company of special weapons were BTR-80. Detailed photos of the interior of the car from the inside and outside can be seen in the report from the 22nd Specialized Brigade. they are identical.
The Israeli off-road vehicle Zibar was also tested in the brigade. He amazed everyone, of course, with his crazy cross-country ability, tk. even in one of the most impassable places gave 120 km / h. But the niches in the brigades are not very visible to him, tk. not armored, and the main divisions, again, move forward on foot.
There is also a platoon of unmanned aerial vehicles, which are armed with complexes based on the UAV 421-08 "Grusha", I did not photograph them, because I have already seen the same in the 22nd brigade (see the link), but the opinion of the officers is as follows: unmanned aircraft short-range is good for reconnaissance battalions of motorized rifle brigades located in the front line. Special Forces brigades do not need such a drone, tk. they work deep behind enemy lines and it is completely impractical to carry an extra weight on themselves for several hundred kilometers. Long-range UAVs are needed that allow reconnaissance in the depths of enemy territory.

Let's take a closer look at snipers.
11.

They are all contract soldiers, at the moment there is only one conscript, but in the future he will be replaced. Most of them studied at the courses at the Solnechnogorsk school. School graduates are entitled to an additional payment of 30 thousand rubles per month
12.

Normally, snipers are supplied with an SVD rifle, scout-snipers of the VSS "Vintorez", the most professionally trained fighters within the group are assigned sniper rifles of foreign production

From foreign weapons there are:

They promise to soon make, by replacing, the standardization of all foreign rifles in the division under the caliber .308win (replacement for SSG04?).
With SV-98 in the division they had no business, but they heard about its shortcomings, they spoke well about Lobaev's products. I told the commander about the Orsis T-5000, since Sasha recently shared his opinion. In short, the officer has a high opinion of foreign rifles, a very good weapon, but as a patriot, of course, he wants his own.

Better PSO, of course, but not very good

The brigade's snipers were provided with ballistic calculators, meteorological stations, night vision devices, range finders, and observation tubes. The equipment is still at their own expense.

27.

EOTech 512 collimator sights are routinely issued to the deputy commanders of the groups for the assault rifle. Different people have different opinions on their use, one officer said that it was a good thing, the other, that yes, it was good, but I don’t see much sense in it, he would not take on assignments
35.

The same is true for various sheds for weapons such as handles, strips, etc. Some officers used them on assignments and responded well, others said that they used them, but they would not take them to combat exits, because they do not give special advantages, but add excess weight. Among the reasons why there is no need for them (from people who used different pribluds) the following were named:
- The experience of Chechnya has shown that all the clashes took place near special forces groups at a distance of 20-30 meters, where optics, collimator do not play a role - the enemy is perfectly visible and so.
- any extra load during long pedestrian crossings (which is the norm in special forces) is always a burden.
- sights, pens, bars, no-no, tend to cling to uniforms, if necessary, to sharply bring the weapon into a firing position.

The NSVS "Utes" machine gun was also demonstrated from the weapon.
36.

It is the TV crew who are torturing one of the snipers.

Soldiers consume the remaining ammo
38.

In 2006, the entire brigade replaced automotive equipment (mainly URALs), including communication vehicles (they came from KAMAZ)

39.

Further, at the training ground, we were shown the passage of an obstacle course.
In the photo there are conscripts. The brigade made a decision to equip two battalions with contract soldiers (at the moment it is 70% completed), one with conscripts (for preparing a reserve)
40.

41.

Lessons per day can be up to 10 hours (8 in the afternoon and 2 at night), the emphasis is on physical, tactical and special, fire training, topography, engineering training, etc.

This guy served as a "ladder" for the whole group.
44.

After completing the passage of the strip, the TV crew drove the guys over again for a phased filming.
"Wounded", without flinching, fulfilled the wish
45.

In general, all movements from the unit to the landfill and back (18 km in one direction) are made on foot, in the form of forced marches, etc. This is how endurance is trained
46.

Take two. At the forefront of the attack is the group commander, a lieutenant. This year, about 25 young officers from schools came to replenish the brigade. If earlier, in the early 2000s, many immediately after joining the unit wrote a letter of resignation, then somewhere in 2007 they go with the desire to serve. Some also agree to sergeant positions, just to continue their service (as they vacate their positions, they are put on officer positions). In the brigade, bonuses are paid by order of the Ministry of Defense No. 400.
47.

In the role of the "ladder", the same guy - handsome
48.

49.

50.

There is also a mountain strip at the landfill. One of the brigade units has a full standard set of mountain shooters equipment
51.

52.

Only guys with the highest category of suitability - A1 - are subject to conscription into the brigade. It is becoming more and more difficult to select such people, because every year the quality of health of conscripts falls and falls
53.

Approximately 30% of the conscripts in the brigade are persons with higher education

On July 8, 2007, a monument to all those killed in Afghanistan and Chechnya was unveiled directly at the brigade's headquarters in Tambov

The 16th separate special forces brigade, or military unit 54607, is stationed in the city of Tambov. The compound is listed in the Book of Honor of the former Moscow Military District, and was awarded a challenge banner several times. The brigade consists of four battalions. Three are in the garrison on the territory of the former chemical protection school, the fourth is in the village of Protasovo, Tambov Region.

Story

The division was formed in January 1963 in the village. Chuchkovo, Ryazan region. In 1972 he carried out the task of extinguishing fires in several areas of the Central Region. Later, the structural units of the compound carried out tasks to protect government facilities in Tajikistan, and also were engaged in the elimination of criminal groups in Chechnya and North Caucasus region... In 2001-2002. the brigade participated in peacekeeping operations in Kosovo, and in 2008-2009. on the territory of Abkhazia. It was relocated to Tambov in 2003.

Living conditions in the barracks (sleeping places, washbasin, change house)

Eyewitness impressions

The material and living conditions of service are called good. Fighters of such a unit as military unit 54607 live in comfortable cockpit hostels. Each cockpit has a separate shower room and bathroom. There are washing machines, but the soldiers acquire powder and other detergents on their own from monetary allowance.
Of the infrastructure facilities on the territory of the unit there is a shop, a bathhouse, a sports complex and a canteen. Officers and soldiers eat together.
Irregular relations and bullying are not noted for several reasons. Firstly, servicemen of different conscription do not live on the same floor of the hostel. Second, the soldiers are examined physically and physically every evening. Thirdly, mailboxes are posted throughout the garrison, in which each of the employees can put a written message to the leadership.

Physical training

At present, military unit 54607 is 50% staffed with contract servicemen. The selection criteria for applicants are as follows:

  • Age 18-35 years old;
  • Complete secondary or vocational education;
  • Knowledge of at least one foreign language;
  • Positive results of psychological and physical selection;
  • Medical certificate of the form not lower than A-1;
  • The written consent of the relatives or spouse to serve the candidate in the special purpose unit.

As for a foreign language, the officers are entitled to monetary surcharges for proficiency in a European or Eastern language. At the same time, the exam in foreign language employees pass annually, and graduates of specialized military educational institutions- Twice a year.

A sportsman in one of the barracks

In addition to specialized language exams, soldiers undergo psychological and physical testing once a month. If a fighter fails the tests, he can be transferred to another unit that does not belong to special forces.
Shooting practice is held once a week, at the range near the village. Protasovo. Field exercises last about a month and are held in summer time... Also, classes in hand-to-hand combat are regularly held, there is a jumping tower, where soldiers learn to parachute. For a certain number of jumps, special forces are paid extra.
Servicemen of military unit 54607 receive money on a VTB-24 card.

There is no ATM at the checkpoint, a Sberbank terminal is installed, and a commission of 100 rubles is charged for withdrawing money. Parents are advised to hand over to employees the Momentum card opened in their own name. If it was not possible to hand over the card, the soldier can ask to withdraw money from contract servicemen, or those who are on leave.

Study room

The oath is taken after the course of a young fighter, which lasts about a month. They are sworn in on Saturdays at 9:00 am. Relatives are advised to arrive early in order to issue a pass at the checkpoint. After the event, leave is allowed on the security of the passport of the parents or wife. For the rest of the time, dismissal services are provided upon the arrival of relatives. The soldier notifies the unit commander about this in the form of a report. It is desirable to write it on Thursday. If the leave is denied, you can meet with the fighter at the checkpoint, where there is a room for visitors. Dismissals are granted from 13.00 on Saturday (after the park-business day) and from 9.00 in the morning on Sunday. The soldier must arrive at the unit no later than 20.00.

Servicemen of military unit 54607 are given telephones every evening, one hour before lights out. Fighters receive MTS SIM cards with inexpensive tariffs under the Call Mom program at the military registration and enlistment office. A lost SIM card cannot be restored; they buy a new one, usually Megafon.
On the territory of the unit there is an infirmary, there is a medical unit. In case of complications of diseases or prolonged acclimatization, soldiers can be sent to a military hospital in Tambov.
