Story

The settlement, from which the current city was formed, arose in 1779 on the site of the Zaporizhzhya winter camp. The settlement arose at the end of the 17th century as a Zaporozhye winter quarter. At the end of 1779, the Grigorievka settlement was founded in its place, and therefore this year was chosen as the official date of the foundation of the city. In 1785, Grigorievka was renamed Novogrigorievka. Since 1806 it has a modern name, at the same time Verkhnedneprovsk was made a county town of the Verkhnedneprovsky district of the Yekaterinoslav province.

At the end of the 19th century, there were 7,671 inhabitants; 10 factories (candle factory, mead factory, two brick factories, steam mill). In Verkhnedneprovsk there were 4 fairs a year. There was a women's 4-class progymnasium, with 84 students; 3-class city school, with 64 students, and a school at the prison castle, a zemstvo hospital; the zemstvo public library, which was used free of charge by teachers and employees in the zemstvo and in the city government.

Zemstvo prepared and put into circulation its own postage stamp - which was the first of its kind in the Russian Empire. Verkhnedneprovsk also had 1 Orthodox church, 1 synagogue and 1 Jewish prayer house.
