The Plate Glass group also includes Aston University, which received its status in 1966.

  • New Universities. This group was formed only in 1992, since it was then that a number of the newest colleges earned the right to be called universities, and received state subsidies along with other, more ancient universities.

Brighton University was originally an art school, received university status in 1992

  • Recently Created Universities. The youngest category, formed in 2005. By analogy with the previous groups, it includes universities, formerly called colleges.

The University of Bedfordshire is one of the newest universities in England, founded in 2006.

You can familiarize yourself with the position of universities in England in the world ranking.

The most famous building in Cambridge is King's College Cathedral. It has been under construction for almost a hundred years - since 1446, and has become the greatest architectural structure.

Apart from educational activities, this educational institution boasts of having numerous research centers, as well as the largest library in the United Kingdom. Applicants entering Cambridge most often prefer medical and social sciences.

Oxford competes with Cambridge for the right to be called best university Great Britain, which is explained not only by the high standards of education, but also by the prestige of the diploma. It is due to the fact that more than 50 students studied at the university, who later became Nobel laureates. In addition, among his listeners were representatives of the political elite, such as Bill Clinton, Tony Blair and others.

To date, Oxford allows 21 thousand students to receive education at the same time. A quarter of them are international students.

Among other things, the university is actively scientific activity, and its scientists made a list of high-profile discoveries. The quality of education at Oxford is undeniable, as this university has earned the Queen's Award 9 times, which is more than any other educational institution in England.

York University and Eton are also among the largest universities in the UK and boast a huge number of international students. They often received various awards and prizes for the highest quality of education, which made them extremely popular with applicants. Among the areas of study there are natural, humanitarian and Social sciencies.

Just like the others educational establishments, occupying a leading position, York University is a major research center. According to this indicator, he took 14th out of 155 places among educational institutions in England, which is confirmed by his numerous awards.

British universities give their graduates not only a prestigious diploma, but, more importantly, a solid knowledge base, often incomparable with domestic universities. How to enter one of the higher educational institutions in the UK, what is required from students from the CIS and how best to organize the preparatory process? "Abroad" reveals the intricacies of the entrance campaign to British universities

The kingdom is considered to be one of the main training centers world, and UK universities can easily compete in classical disciplines with the Ivy League. The advantage of British universities is not only the excellent material base and teaching staff, but also the age-old traditions of education: the student receives the lion's share of knowledge within the framework of independent work and search for material. The role of the teacher is very often limited only to the control and coordination of the educational process.

For many applicants from the CIS, such an education system may seem like a curiosity, but there is not much choice: either adapt or go to your native land. However, despite all the difficulties, the queue of those wishing to gnaw at the British granite of science is getting longer every year. Therefore, let's figure out how to enter a UK university.

Julia Girshfeld, Associate at Southfields Solicitors

Applicants entering British universities must first of all have the necessary qualifications and level of knowledge of the English language. With regard to qualifications, a regular school certificate from the CIS countries is usually not enough and, in order to meet the requirements, it will be necessary to pass preparatory Course in the UK (university foundation program) lasting usually a year or six months for admission to British university. If the applicant already has higher education, then the diploma may be accepted instead of the preparatory course.

University Search

The very first stage is the choice of a suitable educational institution. Education in the UK is a well-established sector of the economy that brings considerable income to the state. Great amount universities and colleges, more than 35 thousand educational programs and courses - here for everyone head will go around. To help applicants in their difficult search, there are special exhibitions, presentations and, of course, the UCAS system.

To be honest, the exhibitions did not give me anything: all universities are very expensive and nothing is really clear. I had to look for all the options in London myself via the Internet. I just looked at the courses (Courses), it clearly describes what will be studied. I chose those that I liked the most and which I went through. In top universities, the requirements for IELTS are higher (6.5-7.0, and if it is literature, history or law, then GPA maybe 7.5), and the price, respectively, is also higher. If the university is in the TOP-15 of England, then the cost can reach 15 thousand pounds per year.

The centralized UCAS system is designed to make life easier for applicants. The questionnaire is completed online and can be applied to a maximum of five different courses at once (five programs at one university or one program at five different universities). Application deadlines vary by institution and program of study.

October 15 - for Oxford, Cambridge, and for medical, dental and veterinary programs;

June 30 - orders received after the specified date are entered into the Clearing list (secondary recruitment list).

It is also necessary to prepare a good motivation letter about why the candidate wants to study in a particular course, what qualities he has (personal statement). If the applicant does not have any certificate at the time of submission, then the offer from the university (if the university decides to accept the applicant) will be conditional and will depend on the applicant's satisfaction of certain requirements (for example, reaching a certain level of language proficiency).

Egor Shevchenko, student from London

Most universities can only apply through UCAS. It is very convenient and clear, everything is saved, you do not need to fill in everything at once. The only problem is that you can only apply to five universities. I also applied directly to some universities, and then I appreciated all the convenience of UCAS. Everyone has their own question formats, their own requirements: some require a motivation letter for 2000 words, others for 1000, some require answers to specific questions. In addition, each educational institution required a different number of references from teachers or from the workplace. There is only one format available on UCAS, in which you create your profile and fill in all the information about yourself, which is very convenient.

Language proficiency

Language proficiency requirements depend on the university, but an academic IELTS 6.5 is usually required (for some specialties, the requirement is higher). At the same time, it should be noted that an applicant from the CIS will also have to satisfy the requirements of immigration law for knowledge of the language (in this moment CEFR Level B2 for higher education). The applicant must provide a certificate from the test sheet approved by the immigration services.

Egor Shevchenko, student from London

They say that it is unrealistic to prepare for the IELTS exam on your own. This is true and not: the problem is that the test checks not only the level of English, but also the ability to study in English. Therefore, there are a lot of all sorts of tricky questions, especially to confuse. You need to prepare not only English, but learn a special IELTS format, there are approximate templates and types of questions for which you should prepare. For example, the main advice: in reading you don’t need to read the text, it is very large, it will take a lot of time. It's better to read the questions, underline the keywords and then scan the text for those keywords and their synonyms or something similar.

What about the certificate?

The duration of secondary education in the UK is 13 years, in contrast to the traditional eleven in the CIS countries. This can be a major problem as our high school diploma is not the equivalent of a British high school diploma. You can complete the foundation year directly in England, after which you can enroll in a local institution of higher education. However, these courses can cost up to £10,000, not including living expenses.

Ways to enter a British university: from high school to master's

15-16 years old - iGCSE program

What is it
The iGCSE preparatory program (the international version of GCSE) was designed specifically for international students entering a British high school. You can enter it only at the age of 15 or 16 - the 2-year British plan for preparing for high school is completed here in 1 year. As a rule, Russian students enter this program after receiving a certificate of completion of the 9th grade or after graduating from school as an external student. As part of the program, students study 5-8 subjects, study English intensively and take the exam for the iGCSE certificate.

Why do
The earlier a child enters the English education system, the easier it is for him to adapt to a new environment. The student will already be focused on his academic results, not being distracted by learning the language and resolving issues related to living in a new country.

It is important to note that the earlier the transition is made, the more forgiving admission requirements await the student. The iGCSE program imposes much less stringent requirements on applicants than the senior classes. English school(A-Level or IB). This allows you to get an advantage, because it is quite difficult to enter the upper grades in the UK right away. A child without preparation falls into conditions of increased workload on a par with English schoolchildren - no one will give a discount to foreign students. iGCSE has become a certain transitional period from the Russian to the British school. In addition, intensive English learning and small size study groups allow curators to deal with each student individually.

What is needed
As a rule, the more prestigious the school, the higher the requirements. It is usually necessary to pass a test on English language, provide a certificate with grades. Many schools will also ask you to take a test in mathematics, some will ask for additional exams in subjects. An interview may also be required - via Skype or in person.

16-17 years old - senior English school (A-Level or IB)

What is it
The English high school program exists in several versions, the most famous are A-Level and IB (International Baccalaureate). These are two-year courses (from 16 to 18 years old), during which the student studies 3-4 subjects chosen by him at an advanced level (A-Level) or 6 academic subjects (3 at an advanced and 3 at a standard level) from six groups of disciplines (IB ).

A-Level is focused on a narrow specialization and is more suitable for students who have already chosen their university and specialty, the IB program is more extensive and is considered somewhat more difficult. There is also a two-year Pre-U Cambridge program, which provides in-depth study of 3 subjects from the proposed ones and is a kind of hybrid of A-Level and IB. In fact, these programs are the British certificate of complete secondary education. They are recognized by all countries of the world as a university admissions qualification. But which of them is right for you, a specialist consultant in secondary education will help you determine.

Why do
To get into Cambridge, Oxford or another of the top five universities in the UK, you need to have an excellent academic background and recommendations. Moreover, with all the complexity of admission, it will be even more difficult to study - British universities, unlike Russian ones, very quickly and quite easily expel students for poor progress. No one will convince the student to pass the test on time or participate in the seminar - this will simply be taken into account when grading. Two years of study at A-Level, IB or Pre-U Cambridge give students the opportunity to perfectly learn all the features of the British education system from the inside.

What is needed
To enter the A-Level or IB, you need to pass an exam in English and mathematics, as well as provide a certificate with grades and pass an interview. Some schools may have additional requirements.

17-18 years old - Foundation program

What is it
In the UK, students study at school for 12 years and enter the university at the age of 18. In Russia, the school course takes 11 years, but nevertheless, you will not be admitted to a British university until your 18th birthday. Therefore, in the UK, a program of preparation for entering the university - Foundation - was created specifically for foreign students. The typical duration of this program is academic year ie 9 months. But there are options for those who have a low level of English (12 months), and for those who are fluent in the language (6 months). Participants of the program study the language, profiling academic subjects and purposefully prepare for entering the university.

Why do
The peculiarity of the program is that upon successful completion, the student is guaranteed to enter one of the universities with which there is an agreement on the recognition of this Foundation program. It can be a specific university or several to choose from. You can, of course, wait until the 18th birthday and apply to the university on your own, but an applicant with a Foundation certificate will always have an advantage in enrolling. In addition, a year of study in the preparatory program is good practice and preparation for independent study at a British university, as well as the opportunity to pass the required language exam.

What is needed
It is necessary to provide a diploma of secondary education (Russian Matura) with a high average score and to speak English at the intermediate level (IELTS 4.5-5).

18-19 years old - to a British university after the 1st year of a Russian university

What is it
The International Year One or International Diploma program, designed specifically for international students, corresponds to the first year British university. Education is conducted in small groups, in addition to subjects in the specialty, English as a foreign language is also taught. A dedicated tutor provides support to students throughout their studies, helping to resolve both academic issues and issues related to living in the UK. The program itself is designed for 9 months of study, and for applicants with a low level of English, a program for 12 months is offered.

Why do
The transfer from a Russian university to a foreign one has an important advantage - it is the opportunity to change specialization. Changing a higher educational institution, a student can choose to study in a new field for himself. In addition, this opportunity is especially interesting for those who want to get a diploma in a field that is not very common in Russian universities.

Thanks to the International Year One or International Diploma program, Russian students can enter an English university without losing a year of study. Upon successful completion of the program, the student is automatically transferred to the 2nd year of the university and continues to study in the general stream along with British students.

What is needed
An extract from the examination record, a certificate of complete secondary education and the results of the IELTS language exam at least 5-6 points. It is possible that in order to transfer to the chosen university, you will have to pass additional exams, write a motivation letter, provide recommendations or pass an interview.

20-21 years old - transfer to a British university after the 2nd or 3rd year of a Russian university

What is it
Students who have completed two or three courses at a Russian university may try to transfer to a second year at a British university. True, different universities have different policies in this regard. Somewhere, transfer to the second and subsequent undergraduate courses is not practiced in principle - only to the first year. In some universities, transfer to the second year is not allowed for all specialties, while transfer to the third year, as a rule, is not practiced in any top university. Much depends on the availability of vacancies in senior courses - and in prestigious universities there are practically no such places.

Why do
There may be several reasons. Some students, having studied 2-3 courses at a domestic university, understand that the quality of education and the amount of knowledge gained do not satisfy them. Someone gets the prospect of foreign employment, where an international diploma may be required. And someone decides to link their plans for the future with life in the UK, which causes a completely logical desire to get a local diploma of higher education. In any case, we can say that the procedure for such a transfer is not an easy task, and the reason for it must be weighty.

What is needed
Just like after the first year, you must provide an extract from the examination record (grades must be brought into line with the British system, and the Russian university must be officially recognized in the UK) and the results of the IELTS language exam are not lower than 6-7.5 . It is quite possible that in order to transfer to the chosen university, you will have to pass additional exams, write a motivation letter or pass an interview.

After 21 years - Graduate Diploma, pre-masters and magistracy

What is it
Holders of a bachelor's or specialist's degree who have completed 4 years of training at a Russian university can enter a British university and receive a master's degree in their specialty. Before entering the magistracy, it is recommended to pass preparatory program Pre Masters, in which language skills are improved and adaptation to new system education.

If the new specialty is somewhat different from the one you already received, then you should pay attention to the Graduate Diploma program. This program allows you to change the direction of study and enroll in a master's program in a specialty other than a bachelor's degree (but with certain restrictions - for example, an economist will not be able to enroll in a medical master's program).

Why do
The Pre Masters program provides an opportunity to improve English to the level required for master's studies in 3-6 months. The Graduate Diploma program will be useful for those who want to change their specialization before further admission to the magistracy or who wish to acquire additional training and an English university diploma in a field of interest.

What is needed
A diploma of higher education (bachelor or specialist), a document confirming English language proficiency at IELTS 6.5-8, a motivation letter, essay, resume, recommendations and GRE or GMAT exam results. Requirements vary depending on the university and the chosen specialty. We enter best universities from January 2018 >>

In case the applicant did not pass given test, some universities provide the opportunity to take an English proficiency test directly at their place of arrival. Such a test is called the "Placement test" and allows you to determine the level of knowledge of the language. After passing this test, the student will be recommended an English course, in accordance with the student's demonstrated knowledge. Upon completion of the proposed course, the student begins training in the chosen specialty.

If you have an IELTS certificate, the result of which will correspond to the required level, enrollment in the chosen specialty is guaranteed.

Cost of education

  • Humanities & Social Sciences - £8000 - £35000
  • Technical - £8000 - £250000

Certificate of completion of the international preparatory program

In order to be enrolled in a bachelor's degree, an applicant must have a certificate of completion of an international preparatory program (such as A-Levels, International Baccalaureate, etc.), or another document confirming the presence of a 12-year education.

Having a standard school certificate of completion of 11 years of secondary education, an applicant can take the University Foundation program (a preparatory academic program). After completing this program (usually it lasts one year, but there are also semi-annual ones), the applicant will move on to the first year of the bachelor's degree.

In some universities in the UK, it is possible, with an 11-year school certificate, to enter the 1st year of a college at this university. Thus, the student will not lose a year on the Foundation course and will study the standard number of years in his chosen specialty.

Requirements for admission to the Masters Degree (postgraduate study) in the UK

In order to enroll in a Masters Degree (postgraduate study), a student must provide a diploma of completion of a bachelor's course (this may, among other things, be Russian universities and universities in other countries).

Also, some universities consider direct work experience in the chosen specialization as a basis for enrolling in a master's course, even without a bachelor's degree.

Students who do not qualify for admission to the Masters Degree can go to the Pre-Masters (preparation for graduate studies). Successful completion allows you to easily enter graduate school.

Masters Degree (master's degree) is both a great opportunity to expand knowledge in an existing bachelor's specialty, and an opportunity to acquire a new specialty.

If the choice fell on a master's program that differs from his/her bachelor's degree, then passing the Pre-Masters may be a condition for admission to the master's program.

Preparation of necessary documents

We will advise you in detail on this issue, because sometimes the requirements for a package of documents may differ, but often consist of:

  • Documents confirming the identity, documents on the existing education (translated and certified).
  • A motivational letter in English (usually one page long) describing what motivated you to choose the course and what makes you a good candidate for admission (personal achievements, vision for the profession, etc.). Motivation letters must be unique, as they are checked for plagiarism.
  • The educational institution may request one or two letters of recommendation. These can be letters of recommendation from teachers, a letter from the internship that the student took, a letter from the employer. Letters of recommendation also need to be translated into English.

Filling out the required forms for admission

We will take care of this process to maximize your chances of admission.

When applying for undergraduate studies at universities, there may be a single deadline for accepting documents - January 15th. But there are also exceptions when universities make admissions during the year. Here you need to consider each selected course individually.

Application dates for college, graduate and doctoral programs depend on the type of institution and specialization.

  • The reply is in process

Waiting for a response can take from a week to five

  • Obtain confirmation of admission to study.

You will receive a positive confirmation of enrollment in the form of an email.

  • Confirmation of acceptance of the offer of the educational institution.

The applicant will need to confirm that he accepts the offer of admission. Confirmation is usually given up to 6 weeks (it depends on the particular university). Usually, confirmation is accompanied by a deposit, the amount of which depends on the set tariff.

The higher education system in the UK is a classic model:
bachelor's degree (BA, BSc) + master's degree (MA, MSc).
Duration bachelor riat- 3 years, BScHour programs - 4 years, including an internship at a foreign university and practice at an enterprise.
Duration magistracy- 1 year.
Admission to the university for the bachelor's degree is carried out on the basis of a competition of certificates, which are submitted to the centralized commission of UCAS, and from there they are already sent to the universities chosen by the applicant. You can choose up to 5 universities.

Asking the question - "in the UK, how to enter?" - remember that you immediately "kill two birds with one stone" - get an internationally recognized higher education and perfect your knowledge of the English language - absolutely necessary in the modern world.
How to enter such universities after the Russian school?
There is a simple way - and in particular in England, but we will not talk about this here, since we are now talking about higher education.

So, what does a Russian student need to know about British colleges?

First of all, it’s impossible to enter an English university right away, from the school bench. Why? Because of the difference in programs. In addition, the Russian high school lasts 11 years, and the British - 13. After 11 years of study, British students take and receive a high school diploma.

Graduates who wish to receive higher education move on to the 2-year A Level program - a program of preparation for entering a university. Therefore, one of the most common options for admission -

Theoretically, any Russian schoolchild who has reached the age of 16, who knows English at the right level and has a good certificate, can use the A Level program and then follow the standard path of a British applicant and, as a result, get .

Information ___________________________________________________________________________________________
A-Level- 2-year programdvuzovskogo" training or the last stage secondary education in England.
Includes up to four items simultaneously. Subjects are selected those that will be profiling in an educational institution.
Surrendered at the end of the first year AS level exams and at the end of the second year A Level. At both levels, 20-30% of grades are given during training, the rest - in exams. Passing score - "BBC" - "AAA", depending on the college.
For certain specialties, there may be a separate requirement "A" - in mathematics or "A" in foreign languages.
The program provides an opportunity to enter not only British, but educational institutions around the world.

Another "intermediate" option for preparing for admission to college of england - International Baccalaureate program, International Baccalaureate, IB.
IB certificates are recognized not only in the United Kingdom, but in 50 countries around the world, including some Russian educational institutions.
Bachelor's is a wider course than A level, although it lasts the same 2 years.

As part of the bachelor's degree, up to 6 subjects are studied at the same time, including native language, a foreign language, humanitarian and natural subjects, as well as a major subject for a future university.

For admission, you must be at least 16 years old and pass an interview in English.

At the end of the program, 6 exams are taken and an essay is written; To receive a certificate, you must score at least 24 points. It is clear that if you plan to enter a prestigious university, there should be more points (grading system - from 1 to 6). Examination subjects are divided into standard and higher - the latter are profiling for the future specialty and it is also desirable to get maximum marks for them.

But both A Level and International Baccalaureate are, strictly speaking, still secondary education.
A shorter and, accordingly, more popular "gateway", "bridge" between the Russian and British education systems - program which lasts 1 year.

Foundation is an undergraduate preparation program designed specifically for international students. As a rule, within the framework of the program, the student chooses one of the directions:
. business and economics,
. law and humanities
. art And Design,
. mathematics and computer science,
. natural sciences and biology, etc.
and receives the basics of the future profession during this year of study.

Students who are at least 16.5 years old can enter the Foundation program, provided that they turn 17 in the year of admission. It is also necessary to have knowledge of English at a level not lower than IELTS 5.0 - 5.5 (or TOEFL 70-80) points, a good certificate of secondary education.
